Abstract

Regarding TBI patients, team members of EMDs experience substantial difficulties that lead to burnout. These limitations impede their ability to conduct research and have created lags in the research productivity of this medical specialty. Consideration is lacking for burnout-related confusion in the reduced investigative progress of these research teams. Over the ten years of an author-facilitated burnout reduction program, a significant number of researchers who sought help reported burnout-related confusion. This finding may be relevant to EMD teams researching TBI patients. Following a review of burnout in this medical specialty, an examination of the difficulties that impede TBI research in EMDs reveals a composite picture of researchers as likely experiencing burnout-related confusion. Regarding the author’s ten-year burnout reduction program based on a structured series of 28 writing prompts, there is an identification of the extent to which researchers experience burnout-related confusion. Also presented is the range of health-related research stalled as a result. All researchers engaged in the program were able to restart their research upon completing the intervention process. Following the success of this program, an offered template permits the restarting of the encumbered TBI research. The intent is to aid in reducing possible burnout-related confusion of team members in EMDs investigating TBI. This work represents the first review of the extent of burnout confusion experienced by researchers in the context of EMDs. The results of the burnout-reduction program offer an option for supporting EMDs in resolving medical team burnout, aiming to increase their TBI research.
