Abstract

The accelerating pace of global change underscores the critical role of social science in shaping inclusive and sustainable societies. While technological and economic innovations are often prioritized, social science provides the essential insights into human behavior, cultural dynamics, governance, and equity that determine the success of such innovations. This commentary highlights three pressing arenas where social science scholarship is most urgently needed: (1) urbanization and mobility, where research can guide policies that balance modernization, heritage preservation, and environmental sustainability; (2) digital transformation, where scholars can critically evaluate emerging inequalities while promoting inclusive access to technology; and (3) climate change, where community-based research ensures that adaptation and mitigation strategies are both contextually appropriate and socially acceptable.
