Dr. Muqeem Khan is a distinguished transdisciplinary designer and design researcher whose career integrates academia, design innovation, visual effects, and integrative medicine. With a passion for advancing design as a research-driven practice, Dr. Khan bridges creative inquiry with multidisciplinary problem-solving, making significant contributions to design research and education.

Starting in August 2025, Dr. Muqeem Khan will join Aga Khan University’s School of Arts and Sciences as a faculty member, teaching design thinking and research. In this role, he will guide students in addressing complex challenges through design thinking, empathetic design, and speculative methodologies, empowering them to articulate problems, conduct rigorous investigations, and propose human-centered solutions across diverse disciplines.

Dr. Khan’s academic journey began at Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design and a Master’s degree in Industrial Design. He furthered his expertise with a PhD in Multidisciplinary Studies from the Extended Reality Collaborative at Charles Sturt University, Australia, in 2022. His pioneering design research earned him a finalist position for the Alumni Award of the Year 2023 and a prestigious $1 million research grant from Qatar’s National Priorities Research Program (NPRP).

In the visual effects industry, Dr. Khan contributed to Hollywood’s CGI landscape in 1996, working on films such as Deep Rising, George of the Jungle, Flubber, Armageddon, and Final Fantasy with studios like Walt Disney and Square USA. His expertise in digital design informs his approach to creating compelling visual and perceptual-based solutions in design research.

Beyond academia and technology, Dr. Khan is a licensed herbalist and pulse reader, continuing his family’s Unani medicine tradition through Hakeem Mursaleen Pvt. Ltd. This entrepreneurial venture merges traditional healing with innovative design, promoting holistic health solutions for lifestyle diseases. Dr. Khan’s transdisciplinary expertise positions him as a leader in integrating design research with real-world impact, fostering innovation across creative and scientific domains.
